Course Overview
Are you wanting to learn Te Reo Māori while gaining an understanding of Tikanga Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi at the same time?
Te Puāwai combines all these strands together in one course using a blend of both face to face tutorials and online learning make this course ideal for workers or anyone who would like to develop their knowledge of Te Ao Māori - the Māori world.
Te Puāwai includes the study of introductory Te Reo, and an understanding of Tikanga, Māori Society and the historical and contemporary issues relating to the Treaty of Waitangi.
Designed for absolute beginners, the course involves a mix of collaborative learning, group assessment and individual assignments.
Upon successfully completing the requirements you'll receive the award of:

Topics you'll cover
- Te Puāwai - an introduction to te ao Māori, including elementary te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi
- Te Puāwai 2 - further development of te ao Māori, including te reo Māori, waiata, and Māori society. This topic will also look at the history and contemporary issues related to the Treaty of Waitangi.

Entry criteria
There are no minimum academic requirements (open entry)
Standard Entry Criteria
Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.
Other Considerations
The number of students in each cohort is limited to 30.
English language requirements
IELTS Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 with the Academic Endorsement or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
