Conveyancing is no longer a career just for lawyers! Turn your interest in property and land law into a conveyancing career.

We are the only New Zealand provider authorised to offer this unique qualification. A few years ago conveyancing as a separate profession in New Zealand didn't exist. Then along came a law change which opened up this exciting new legal profession.

This diploma meets the requirements set by the New Zealand Society of Conveyancers and it enables graduates to specialise in the legal field involved in the transfer of residential and commercial property.

The programme provides an understanding of the laws and systems governing property, land, finance, commerce and contracts. You can also develop skills in the administration of estates.

Career opportunities

As conveyancing is a relatively new specialist profession, this diploma offers exciting opportunities to work for conveyancing firms, law firms, or government departments.

After two years in the industry, graduates can also apply for a NZSOC practising certificate which allows them to work as a self-employed conveyancer. Conveyancers carry out the legal work in the sale and purchase of properties and land (both residential and commercial).

Six of the 16 courses JUST5003, JUST5004, JUST6006, JUST6007, JUST6008, JUST6009 are attributable to either New Zealand Diploma of Conveyancing or New Zealand Diploma in Legal Executive Studies.

Student Loans and Allowances

This course meets the requirements for student allowance and student loan applications through StudyLink.

  • A student loan helps to pay for your course fees (the compulsory fees), study materials e.g. books, equipment, and living costs. You'll have to pay this money back.
  • A student allowance is a weekly payment that can help with your living expenses while you're studying. You don't have to pay the money back.

Course Entry Information

Entry criteria

If you are under 20 years of age, you must meet the following criteria to gain entry into this programme:

  • Year 12 School Leavers/Year 12 qualifications:

Fifty (50) credits at Level 2 or above with at least 12 credits in Mathematics, English and one other subject, including a minimum of eight literacy credits at Level 2 or higher in English or te reo Māori; four credits must be in reading and four credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards.

  • Year 13 School Leavers/Year 13 qualifications:

A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework, including a minimum of 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in each of two subjects; and 12 credits in Mathematics at Level 2 or higher; four credits at Level 2 or above in Reading; and four credits at Level 2 or above in Writing.

If you are over 20 years of age, there are no entry requirements.

Special Admission
If you do not meet the academic requirements you may be given special admission if Toi Ohomai staff are satisfied you are capable of successfully completing the requirements.

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology reserves the right to vary the entry requirements for entry into the New Zealand Diploma in Conveyancing programme after consultation with the New Zealand Society of Conveyancers.

You’ll be invited to an information meeting. This is your opportunity to find out more about the course content and to make sure you're on the most appropriate course for your career aspirations and current level of experience.

Standard Entry Criteria

Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.

For Levels 5, 6 and 7 certificate or diploma, domestic students under 20 and all international students must have:

NCEA Level 2 with passes in English/Te Reo Māori or education achievement at least equivalent to NCEA Level 2 and a minimum of 42 credits at level 3; OR

Evidence of ability to complete academic requirements for the programme.

Other Considerations

Students accepted on to the programme will also require the following:

  • Access to a computer and reliable high speed internet service
  • Latest Google Chrome (web browser)
  • Microphone, speakers, web cam (headset)
  • Microsoft Word - minimum version 97-2003

English language requirements

IELTS Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 with the Academic Endorsement or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
