Evaluation of Project-based Learning in the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3)

In 2017, work began on a re-conceptualisation of one of Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s most widely delivered Foundation and Bridging programmes: The New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 3). Thus, it was considered timely to evaluate the programme in Kawerau, the first delivery site for a new Project-Based Learning model.

Using a mixed-methods, case-study approach and following the protocols of other programme evaluations conducted recently across the organisation, this research used semi-structured interviews and focus groups to collect perspectives and insights from students, tutors, employers, and community representatives. It also compared academic results for these two classes with results from previous classes, and with other level 3 programmes in the same faculty.

In line with the innovation, use of multiple technologies, and ‘thinking outside the box’ used in these regional deliveries, we produced a multimedia resource – a vlog and a written report.
