Evelini Vatikani

Evelini Vatikani was determined to make a difference in her community in Tonga, prompting her to move to New Zealand for her education.

Her story is one of resilience and courage and after overcoming many challenges she is now working as an Infection Control Nurse.

Evelini decided to study the Graduate Diploma in Infection Risk Management (Level 7) at Toi Ohomai | Te Pūkenga. Embracing the opportunity for a learning adventure in New Zealand, Evelini thrived in the diverse environment, gaining in-depth knowledge about infection risk management.

With the guidance of the Toi Ohomai career team, she secured a caregiver job, thanks to their support in refining her CV and cover letter.

Despite her success, Evelini says she struggled with the challenges of being away from her family in Tonga and managing time effectively.

However, she says that through consistent prayer, commitment, and goal-setting, she overcame these obstacles.

Evelini says her advice to fellow students would be to schedule assignment due dates.

“Write it in your planner in order to stay organized and manage your time wisely,” she says.

“Be interactive in class, collaborate and communicate with your classmates as well as your tutor, and ask questions if you are struggling with any of your courses.”

Evelini acknowledges the financial support she received from the World Health Organization (WHO).

“I am beyond grateful for them as they have provided me with the financial assistance, I needed to pursue my educational dreams”

She says she is also grateful to the Toi Ohomai staff, tutors, homestay provider, classmates, workmates, and family for their unwavering support.

Although the prospect of study can be daunting, Evelini says ākonga need to remember the significance of what they are trying to achieve.

“Be aware of the consequences of not studying. Your future depends on this. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your tutors and take advantage of learning facilitators, Studiosity and the library. Be open and honest with faculty about what is going on, and you will find they will often work with you to make sure you thrive.”

Having achieved her qualification, Evelini has returned home to Tonga, where she applies her infection control skills in providing holistic care to residents. Her journey serves as an inspiration, highlighting the power of dedication and faith in overcoming challenges and turning dreams into reality.
