Sasha-Lee Tawhara

Sasha-Lee Tawhara has been passionate about becoming a chef for as long as she can remember. The opportunity to pursue her culinary qualifications in her hometown made Toi Ohomai the perfect choice for her.

Sasha is currently studying for a Level 5 Diploma in Culinary Arts and says she "absolutely loves it", praising the supportive environment fostered by her tutors and fellow students.

She says the huge range of opportunities available at Toi Ohomai has enriched her learning experience, making her journey even more fulfilling.

One highlight of Sasha-Lee's journey has been competing in the Nestle Golden Chef Hat competition.

"It was an amazing experience and something I had never done before."

Competing against other chefs and meeting new people within the culinary industry was both fun and enlightening. She says she enjoyed the experience and the chance to forge new friendships.

For the competition, Sasha-Lee prepared oven-baked Horopito and garlic chicken Kiev accompanied with fried Mediterranean-style Chicken Drumstick, served with Mushroom and Maggi Vegetable Barley Risotto and Glazed Carrots, finished with rosemary-infused Creamy Maggi Gluten-Free Chicken Gravy. For dessert, she crafted a Nestlé Royale Chocolate Brownie topped with Buondi coffee-infused Nestlé Docello French Vanilla Mousse, served with Kawa Kawa and Manuka Honey Custard Jelly, Chilli Orange and Brandy Butterscotch Sauce.

Sasha-Lee earned a bronze medal for her dishes and says the experience has opened her eyes to new opportunities.

"It has made me more eager and excited to compete and put myself out there," she says.

She says her tutors provided her with exceptional support,

“Their opinions and past life experiences are very helpful when it comes to food prep and plating dishes.”

Once she graduates Sasha-Lee wants to travel the world as a chef on an international cruise ship, combining her love for cooking with her passion for exploration.

Her advice for anyone considering studying culinary arts is to go for it.

“If you are passionate, love to cook, and want to be a chef, there are so many opportunities available for you at Toi Ohomai. The amazing tutors will guide you along the way, and you will meet some incredible people and make lasting friendships."
