Daniel Mulholland
After six years working in the hospitality sector as a duty manager, Daniel Mulholland, became interested in seeking out a stable vocation with a clear career trajectory. He decided on accounting, because he enjoys analytics and is details-orientated.
In 2023, Daniel began studying towards a Diploma of Business (Accounting strand) at Toi Ohomai, before moving into the Bachelor of Accounting course, which requires an addition two years of study. The Bachelor of Accounting is a CAANZ and CPA accredited degree, meaning on graduation, Daniel we be eligible to complete his chartered accountant qualification and become fully certified professional accountant.
The practical learning environment and smaller class sizes on offer Toi Ohomai were the main factors that influenced Daniel’s decision to complete his degree at our institute.
“It means that all the students get to actively participate in class and if you have any questions, you can also air those to the tutor,” says Daniel.
“I also liked that Toi Ohomai offers more of a practical approach to accounting than what is possible in a University-style lecture theatre setting. We do a lot of theory and all of the conceptual work as well, but there’s a lot of practical things like accounting software which will be good when we go on to work in the field afterwards.”
In year three of the Bachelor of Accounting degree, all Toi Ohomai students complete a six-week industry work placement, meaning they gain relevant work experience in-industry before they graduate. Daniel has also been successful in attaining a three-month summer internship for accounting at Baker Tilly Staples Rodway in Auckland.
Daniel says all Bachelor of Accounting students are all encouraged to apply for a summer internship programme, to develop a practical understanding of the subject area and boost their postgraduate employability.
“Our tutors are always on hand to help with the logistics of the application process. At Baker Tilly Staples Rodway, I will work exclusively in the tax team. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional environment. I highly encourage all new and existing students to apply for one of the many internship programmes on offer,” says Daniel.
Looking ahead, Daniel wants to work in public practice, most likely as a tax accountant. He also plans to pursue his Chartered Accountant qualification after graduation.
“All of the career aspirations I have, and things I’ve learned about the industry, have come from talking to the different tutors I’ve had, and learning what sort of paths they took with their career, and what’s possible,” Daniel says.
