Course Overview

Engineering firms need more people with up to date Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills. Use this introductory part-time course to upskill and broaden your employment options.

You'll complete most of the course online, coming in for just 8 night classes over the 15 weeks. The course introduces you to the skills you need to produce high quality mechanical assemblies in 3D, parts modelling and drawing production.

You'll learn to use SolidWorks software to create simple engineering drawings and three dimensional engineering models. SolidWorks is a user-friendly programme – you'll quickly learn the basics and start practising your new drawing skills.

The course fee includes a Student Design Kit package that you can install at home and use on your own computer for 12 months.

Please note: SolidWorks is a Windows based program and can only be installed on a PC or Laptop running a Windows operating system. It is incompatible with devices running other operating systems.

Upon successfully completing the requirements you will receive:

  • Engineering CAD 1 (Level 3)

This training scheme comprises of NZQA credit for units 2433 and 2436 and 20802.

Course Entry Information

Entry criteria

There are no minimum academic requirements (open entry).

Standard Entry Criteria

Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.

Other Considerations

It is recommended that you are already working in engineering or associated industries and are able to demonstrate knowledge and skills equivalent to:

  • Unit 2431 - draw and interpret engineering drawings under supervision, and
  • Unit 2780 - operate and maintain a personal computer system

English language requirements

Level 3 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
