Are you a registered electrician who wants to work as a qualified electrical inspector?
This course will open up new opportunities for you, increasing your skills and earnings by working as a qualified inspector, examining electrical systems to confirm that they are safe and usable. The classes offer a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge focusing on legal responsibilities, inspection procedures, safety regulations, protection testing and the recording of results.
The construction industry is booming with regions like Auckland and the Bay of Plenty, driving the demand for more electrical inspectors.
Upon successfully completing the requirements you'll receive:
- The Electrical Workers Registration Board Electrical Board Inspector practical assessment
- Preparation for the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) Electrical Inspector Theory examination

Career opportunities
The increasing number of domestic electrical appliances is increasing the number of household electrical systems that are being revamped and need a new certificate of compliance.
It's not just buildings either. One of the other roles electrical inspectors perform is the provision of electrical warrant of fitness certification for mobile homes and caravans which will be connected to the 230 volt supply system.

Topics you'll cover
In-class delivery will be over thirteen three-hour night classes, with an additional full-day practical visit.
You will cover the visual, physical and instrumental testing of installations across a range of specialised and hazardous areas. You'll visit a variety of sites (e.g. the meat works, a motor camp and a marina) to gain practical inspection experience.
This course develops all the skills you need to pass the essential Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) examination, which is required for you to work as a qualified electrical inspector.
Topics include:
- Knowledge and application of current electrical legislation, standards, and codes of practice
- Use of electrical test instruments for inspection purposes
- Inspection of electrical installations
- Recording of inspection results
You'll also be required to complete a theory examination through EWRB ASPEQ. This examination will be paid for separately from this course.

Course Entry Information
Entry criteria
You are required to hold:
- EWRB or Qualified Engineer Registration Certificate
- A current electrical practising licence
Standard Entry Criteria
Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.
Other Considerations
To achieve Electrical Inspector Registration you are required to have three years experience as a Registered Electrician.
You'll be required to present a copy of your current First Aid Certificate. The certificate will need to be from a one day practical first aid equivalent to unit standards 6401/6402 or 26551/26552.
Please contact Red Cross or St John's to book a first aid training session if you don't have a current First Aid Certificate.
English language requirements
Level 5 certificate or diploma IELTS Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed NZ Certificate in English Language Level 4 with the Academic Endorsement or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
