Course Overview
This qualification is an approved training course leading to internationally recognised advanced deckhand fishing certificate, which opens the door to enhanced employment opportunities in New Zealand and offshore.
Graduates of this course will be able to work under supervision in the coastal, offshore and unlimited operational limits as specified in the Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.
Upon successfully completing the requirements you'll receive the award of:
- New Zealand Certificate in Fishing Vessel Crewing (Level 3)
This qualification is an approved training course leading to Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) for the Advanced Deckhand - Fishing endorsement (ADH-F) Certificate of Competency.
You may also be eligible to be awarded:
- STCW Personal Survival (Level 3)
- STCW Basic Firefighting (Level 3)
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (Level 3)
- STCW Elementary First Aid (Level 3)

- Demonstrate safe and sustainable working practices and contribute to effective communications and relationships on board a vessel. Basic safety training:
- Personal survival techniques
- Fire prevention and firefighting
- Emergency procedures
- Elementary first aid
- Prevention of marine pollution
- Prevention of shipboard accidents
- Understand operational factors that affect the safety of the fishing vessel and crew, including nautical terminology and commands.
- Marine (Nautical) terms
- Orders commonly used in fishing operations
- Dangers associated with fishing operations
- Handling and maintenance of deck appliances
- Good personal conduct and use of personal protection equipment to minimise hazards
- Assist with vessel navigation at the support level.

- Understand fishing vessel construction and factors affecting stability and seaworthiness.
- Construction, application, purpose and handling of equipment
- Vessel stability and seaworthiness
- Apply seamanship knowledge and skills to the safe operation of the vessel at the support level.

- Mooring operations and the handling of mooring ropes
- Commands for mooring, anchoring and towing

Course Entry Information
Entry criteria
You must:
- be at least 16 years old
Information Session
You’ll be invited to an information meeting. This is your opportunity to find out more about the course content and to make sure you're on the most appropriate course for your career aspirations and current level of experience.
Standard Entry Criteria
Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.
For courses at levels 1-3, domestic and international students will be required to:
Provide evidence of ability to complete academic requirements.
Other Considerations
Preference will be given to applicants who:
- have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 2), OR
- are employed or seeking employment on an aquaculture or commercial fishing vessel.
English language requirements
Level 3 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
