Aquaculture and Lab Technician

Faculty of Health, Education and Environment

Kevin joined Toi Ohomai in 2013 as an Aquaculture and Lab Technician. Before arriving in the Bay he built up a varied body of work over 15 years, primarily in aquaculture.

His previous experience ranged from producing and wholesaling ornamental fish and saltwater prawns on the sub-tropical east coast of South Africa, to farming and harvesting oysters in the beautiful Mahurangi Harbour, and braving the wild winds of Wellington as an aquaculture technician at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

He's currently working towards a master’s degree through the University of Waikato, with a research focus on changes in New Zealand yellowbelly flounder sex hormone levels and related genetics, with seasonal reproductive cycles. Hopefully, this work will add another piece into the puzzle of farming New Zealand flounder in the future, which is starting to show some promise.

"I’m fortunate in my role, as I get to enjoy doing varied work in both aquaculture and lab management – it’s safe to say no two days are the same," Kevin says.

Thrown into this mix is the opportunity to assist teaching staff in introducing students to a career in aquaculture, and the nuts and bolts of farming New Zealand’s aquatic animals and plants.

Between working, family time, trying to tame our garden, and his master’s studies, free time for hobbies is a bit of a luxury for Kevin. However, he looks forward to spending more time on some of his leisure interests such as photography, camping and surfing, and maybe a spot of tennis or other sports such as mountain biking.
