Debashis is an environmental management tutor at Toi Ohomai, teaching Botany and Vertebrate Biology (Level 5) and Biological Statistics, Biosecurity and Ecological Restoration (Level 6), as well as supervising students who are completing their research projects.

"I love the applied nature of the courses that we offer and especially enjoy spending time with students in the labs and field, translating theory to practice," Debashis says. 

Originally from India, Debashis completed a Master of Science in botany at North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong and went on to teach botany and ecology at a university college in India, while also completing a Doctorate in Plant Ecology. 

His main interests are centered around plant ecology, biodiversity and conservation biology, and he also has a strong interest in biosecurity and the impact of invasive species. From 2004 to 2011, Debashis taught the Auckland University of Technology’s Terrestrial Ecology course in Tauranga and worked as the Tauranga-based paper coordinator on the University of Waikato’s Applied Terrestrial Ecology course from 2012 -2018.
