About this Scholarship

Supporting Māori, Pacific and learners with a disability and/or learning challenge with achieving their higher vocational education aspirations.

Toi Ohomai recognises that graduates of higher-level tertiary education programmes play an important role in supporting the economic and social wellbeing and prosperity of their communities and whānau.

The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage the retention of Māori, Pacific, and learners with disabilities and/or learning challenges into higher levels of tertiary study at Toi Ohomai.

Learners completing higher-level qualifications not only contributes valuable skills and knowledge to our region and Aotearoa New Zealand, but also provide important role models for educational success to future students and their whānau.

Eligibility and Criteria

  • be of Māori descent;
  • have completed/graduated from a Toi Ohomai course within the last two years and the course had a study duration of a minimum of six months;
  • accepted into a higher-level course at Toi Ohomai (for example, if you completed a Level 3 course you must be accepted in a Level 4 or above course)
Note: if you also identify as Pasifika and/or an Accessibility learner (learner with a disability/learning challenge), you may also apply for the Toi Ohomai Whakapumau Pae Tawhiti Scholarship (Ākonga Pasifika/Pacific Learners) and/or the Toi Ohomai Whakapumau Pae Tawhiti Scholarship (Ākonga Āheitanga/Accessibility Learners). However, you will only be awarded one scholarship.

Documents

You must also provide the following documentation with your application:

  1. a cover letter including (1) your pepeha and a brief description of how completing your higher learning course will support your future goals, aspirations, your whānau/family and/or communities; (2) your study and career/employment plan; (3) financial hardship that may impact your study, and;
  2. a signed supporting letter from an academic staff member (teaching or non-teaching) or a kaumatua to support your application.

  • recipients will not be eligible for any other Toi Ohomai administered scholarships in the same academic year.
  • recipients circumstances change (for example you have changed your study plans, or were successful for another Toi Ohomai Scholarship), I will advise the Toi Ohomai Scholarships Office.
  • I will be enrolled and engaging in study at the time of receiving the scholarship
