Applying Lean Construction Principles to Waste Management in Construction, and Identifying Minimisation Opportunities to Inform the industry

In 2016, the construction management team completed a waste minimisation study on the Tauranga campus's new 'M' building.

Data on recycling and waste removal was collected in partnership with the site supervisor and support of the contractor, Greenstone Project Management.

The project was completed on time and within budget, and resulted in a report, a symposium presentation and a feature in the 2017 Enlighten publication.

Greenstone were very pleased with the report, and to gain this extra level of monitoring and feedback about waste and recycling methodology, contacted the team to carry out similar waste tracking research on two Bay Of Plenty Regional Council renovation projects - one in Tauranga, one in Whakatane.

This collaboration with industry has provided new opportunities for staff and students such as site visits and currency in waste minimisation strategies and technology.

These case studies focused on renovations, rather than a green fields build, and therefore contributed new datasets for comparison and analysis.
