SPOR6018 Diving for Scientific Purposes (Level 6) (15 credits)
The Diving for Scientific Purposes (SPOR6018) course follows the latest Scientific Diving New Zealand (SDNZ) requirements to train and produce divers ready to be endorsed by WorkSafe New Zealand to dive as scientists.
Toi Ohomai is a member of SDNZ and review their training manual annually. Toi Ohomai and the marine studies strand is the only tertiary provider in the country which can deliver this course to students. The course takes the diver from diving for recreational purposes to experiencing dives with bail-out bottles and full-masks the same ones used for movies, police and navy. Simulated dive decompression procedures are done along with search and recovery techniques, deploying marker buoys from depth and enhanced diving and finning techniques.
The course may include:
- Minimum scientific diving credential
- Diving for science to 20m
- Diving for science to 30m
- Tethered diving
- Full-face mask and underwater communications
- Dive controller credential
- Kicking techniques including helicopter, frog and reverse kicking
If diving for the purpose of collecting data underwater sounds like your thing, Diving for Scientific Purposes skills are mandatory to have in New Zealand. Our graduates are now in places such as NIWA, Biosecurity Teams around the country, Private Consultants and Iwi dive teams.
