BIOL5014 Marine Vertebrates (Level 5) (15 credits)

The aim of this paper is to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the biology, ecology, behaviour and classification of marine vertebrates.

You’ll examine bony fish, turtles, sharks, whales, seals, dolphins and marine iguanas in detail in the classroom, laboratory and field. How did they evolve? How do they communicate? What adaptations do air-breathing species have to survive under the water for so long? How do they control their body temperature? What senses do sharks have that make them so successful as an apex predator?

Content includes:

  • Evolution and classification of marine vertebrates including identification
  • Biology and ecology of a wide variety of marine vertebrates
  • Reproductive cycles, life cycles, osmoregulation, migrations and behaviour
