Forestry Training Schemes
Introductory Chainsaw Skills (Level 3) (up to 27 credits) aims to provide students with the knowledge of basic maintenance and safe use of a chainsaw for non-commercial or domestic use.
On successful completion of this training scheme, learners will be able to carry out basic maintenance and safely use a chainsaw for jobs such as cutting up logs for firewood, trimming trees, and trimming fence posts.
Completion of the training scheme will also give students credit recognition towards strands of the New Zealand Certificate in Forest Harvesting Operations (Level 3).
Working in Harvesting Operations (Level 3) (up to 30 credits) is aimed at harvesting employees such as those working in harvesting operations crews undertaking basic machine operation, tree felling, breaking out – cable, breaking out - ground based, cross cutting, log scaling, poleman, production thinning, and quality control.
Students will choose from a list unit standards focused on forest operational needs. Completion of the training scheme will also give students credit recognition towards strands of the New Zealand Certificate in Forest Harvesting Operations (Level 3).
Advanced Harvesting Operations (Level 4) (up to 30 credits) is ideal for harvesting employees i.e. those working in crews in advanced harvesting operations such as cable extraction; fleet, sort and stack; ground based extraction; head breaker - out; loading; log making; mechanised felling; mechanised processing; spotting; swing yarder extraction; and tree felling.
Students will choose unit standards focused on harvesting operational needs. Completion of the training scheme will also give students credit recognition towards strands of the New Zealand Certificate in Forest Harvesting Operations (Level 4).
Working in Silviculture Operations (Level 3) (up to 30 credits) is aimed at silviculture employees i.e. those working in crews involved with establishment, silviculture, or mensuration.
Students will choose from a list of unit standards focused on forest operational needs. Completion of the training scheme will also give students credit recognition towards strands of the New Zealand Certificate in Forest Operations (Level 3).
Forest Industry Operations (Level 4) (up to 30 credits) is great for forestry industry employees i.e. those working in crews within advanced forestry, inventory and harvesting operations.
Students will choose from a list of unit standards focused on advanced operational needs. Completion of the training scheme will also give students credit recognition towards strands of the New Zealand Certificate Industry Operations (Planning and Monitoring) (Level 4).

Wood Manufacturing Training Schemes (Block Courses)
Timber Machining is ideal for wood manufacturing employees i.e. those working in sawmills and processing plants in a timber machining apprentice role. Over a three to four year period employees enter an apprenticeship with Competenz and attend four three-week block courses at the Timber Industry Training Centre (TITC) at Waipā Campus, outside Rotorua.
Students will receive credit recognition towards the New Zealand Certificates in Wood Manufacturing – Timber Machining strand at Level 2 and Level 3 and the New Zealand Certificate in Timber Machining (Level 4).
Saw Doctoring is aimed at wood manufacturing employees i.e. those working in sawmills and processing plants in a sawdoctoring apprentice role. Over a three year period employees enter an apprenticeship with Competenz and attend five two-week block courses at the Timber Industry Training Centre (TITC) at Waipā Campus, outside Rotorua.
Students will receive credit recognition towards the New Zealand Certificate in Wood Manufacturing – Sawdoctoring Strand at Level 3 and the New Zealand Certificate in Saw Doctoring (Level 4).
Core Skills is for wood manufacturing employees i.e. those working in sawmills and processing plants in any operations role. Over a week employees cover a range of unit standards covering core skills at Level 2 and Level 3 on site around New Zealand.
These unit standards give students credit recognition towards a New Zealand Certificate in Wood Manufacturing. Core skills Level 3 is delivered over 3 x 2 days periods over 3 months.
