Delights Served Up at Supper Club Fundraiser

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology played host to a group of unknown guests as part of this year’s sold-out Supper Club fundraiser.

Supper Club is a “must-attend” event on Rotorua’s social calendar but also puts valuable funds into the running costs of Rotorua’s two Ronald McDonald Family Retreats. The retreats, on the shores of Lake Rotorua at Ngongotahā, are used by families of children who are very sick or families who have had children die as the result of illness. Guests buy tickets to the event, but don’t find out where they are dining until the night.

Senior culinary arts tutor Jonathan Chemis and his ākonga hosted three tables of eight guests at the Institute’s Kaiwahata Restaurant on Wednesday night, serving up a range of culinary delights.

Included on the menu was prawns with coconut dressing, chicken yakitori, wild mushroom arancini, pork belly, spicy tofu, and lamb backstrap. Supper Club has been running for 15 years, and Jonathan has participated in 14 of those events. Known for his culinary expertise and passion for teaching, Jonathan says he is always excited to take part in Rotorua’s Supper Club event, contributing to a meaningful cause.

"I am honoured to be asked to be part of the annual Supper Club. It's a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community and support families who are going through challenging times.

“The Ronald McDonald Family Retreats provide much-needed respite for these families, and I am proud to support this kaupapa."

Jonathan's involvement in the event also highlights the strong community connections at Toi Ohomai and provides his ākonga with great experience.

"Cooking is not just about preparing food, it's about bringing people together and creating memorable experiences. I hope that through this event, we can make a positive impact on the lives of those who need it most."

The Supper Club event also featured a live and silent auction, with all proceeds going towards the Ronald McDonald Family Retreats.
