Donations from generous Bay of Plenty businesses have ensured local women don’t miss out on valuable educational scholarships.

For the past five years, Toi Ohomai has hosted an annual Charity Golf Day raising money for New Horizons for Women Trust, Hine Kahukura. The 2022 event was scheduled for November but due to poor weather was cancelled.

However, local businesses generously forfeited their sponsorship and/or entry fees to ensure a donation was made to the trust.

Toi Ohomai Business Division Lead Leon Fourie says it was devastating to have to cancel the event due to bad weather.

“Like many events around the country this summer, we also had to cancel for the safety of those who were taking part.

“We look forward to this event all year, and the highlight is that the money we raise goes to such a worthwhile/worthy cause. New Horizons for Women Trust do amazing things for wāhine in our communities and the money donated creates scholarships enabling local women into, or back into tertiary education.”

Dr Fourie says that despite the cancellation Toi Ohomai was committed to donating to New Horizons for Women Trust.

“We didn’t want local women to miss out on these scholarships that enable them to access education or ease the financial strain they may be facing while studying.

“Thanks to the generous organisations who forfeited their sponsorship/entry fees we were able to donate $9000 to the Trust.”

Gail Campbell, New Horizons for Women Trust Chair, says they are grateful for the donation.

"Every year we look forward to partnering with Toi Ohomai for this event.  Last year the funds we received meant we were able to create seven scholarships for wāhine around the rohe."
