BIOL6013 Geology of New Zealand (Level 6) (15 credits)

Get ready to explore the Geology of New Zealand, a land that has been shaped by fire and ice. Aotearoa’s unique position straddling two tectonic plates has resulted in one of the most geologically dynamic and beautiful landscapes on the planet.

We have geological wonders that range from active volcanic cones and steaming geothermal fields to impressive glaciers and alpine ranges.

You'll get up close and personal with some of these features as we explore two distinct geological regions on our overnight fieldtrip around Rotorua and Waitomo.

In this course we will start by exploring the foundational concepts of geology. Beginning with the Big Bang, we trace Earth’s formation, the dynamic processes of plate tectonics, and the rock cycle’s endless transformation.

This information will allow you to understand the forces that have shaped Aotearoa while examining how geological processes impact human life through hazards like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Additionally, an understanding of Geology has implications for improved environmental management as these processes shape the environments that animals and plants depend on.

Content includes:

  • Earth systems
  • Minerals and the rock cycle
  • Plate tectonics
  • Structural geology
  • The processes that have shaped current day New Zealand
  • Hydrology and soil
