Would you like to work alongside teachers and other educational professionals to support children to reach their potential?
This course will give you the skills and attributes you need to work in an education support role, such as a teacher aide, with children from early childhood to secondary school age. You could also work in the health or social services sector working with disadvantaged children or those with disabilities.
This course is also great if you’re currently a teacher aide and would like to upskill and gain a formal qualification recognising your skills and experience, or if you’re interested in creating a pathway to higher study involving working with young children in education, health or social services professions.

Course Entry Information
Entry criteria
- Two character references are required. These should be from persons in positions of trust or responsibility such as an employer, teacher, pastor, kaumātua or kuia. References from family, friends or work colleagues will not be accepted;
- All applicants will be required to provide a signed consent form which allows Toi Ohomai to check the candidate’s record of convictions on entry, during and prior to completing the programme;
- Applicants will be accepted only after a satisfactory police check is received. ALL applicants with ANY convictions will be required to attend an interview with the Group Manager, Programme Manager or delegated staff member from the Education teaching team and may be declined entry depending on the severity, recency, age at offending and pattern of offending.
- In order to be eligible to enrol in this programme, you must prove that you will have continuous access to paid or voluntary work in an educational setting, under the supervision of a registered teacher. This will be your practicum, which is an important part of this programme. An educational setting is anywhere that learning is happening with registered teachers and students. This could be in an ECE centre, primary or secondary school, youth facility or other. This registered teacher will be your 'mentor teacher' and you will spend a minimum of 3 hours per week with them at your chosen educational setting. Some of your assessment tasks will involve reflections on discussions with your mentor teacher about key education support issues. For each topic/paper you’ll complete 18 hours of practicum (approx. 3 hours per week over 6 weeks)
COVID-19 Vaccination Information
You don’t need to supply evidence of your COVID-19 vaccination status to apply for this programme. However, some placement providers may require evidence from you that you are fully vaccinated before allowing you to complete a placement at their organisation. Placements are an integral part of this programme and you’ll need to complete these to be able to successfully achieve your qualification.

Standard Entry Criteria
Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.
For courses at Level 4, domestic students will normally be required to have:
NCEA Level 2 with passes in English/Te Reo Māori or education achievement at least equivalent to NCEA Level 2; OR
Evidence of ability to complete academic and any other programme requirements.
English language requirements
Level 4 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
