Our Partnerships
Toi Ohomai aims to create purposeful connections throughout our region, forming constellations of excellence, knowledge, people, partnerships and innovation united in the exchange of knowledge.
Embracing the value of whanaungatanga, connecting with others, we actively seek relationships with industry, other tertiary providers, community groups, iwi and hapu, and of course, with our students and staff.
These partnerships take many forms, from partnering with local iwi to provide targeted education opportunities in remote parts of our region, to other institutions to delivery education pathways for higher learning, and in many parts of the world to bring international students to New Zealand.
Bay of Plenty Futures Academy
The Bay of Plenty Futures Academy, is a trades academy that provides students with hands-on, trades training options linked to our region’s, 21st century, workforce needs.
Trades Academies is a Secondary-Tertiary partnership aligned with the Vocational Pathways and deliver trades, technology and industry-aligned programmes to secondary students. They are based on partnerships between schools, tertiary institutions, industry training organisations, and employers.
Students in years 11–13 who are interested in a career in the trades, technology or industry can use the Vocational Pathways to identify and plan their study options and develop clear pathways to vocational qualifications that are relevant in the workplace.
Toi Ohomai delivers vocational courses to over 700 secondary school/kura kaupapa students across the wider Bay of Plenty region and partners with BOPTA and schools to provide an integrated learning programme that leads to students achieving NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3.
Charity House Project
The Charity House project began in 2013 and is a ten year training and partnership programme.
The project provides students with hands-on learning opportunities while benefiting the wider community and is something we're very proud of.
The Generation Programme
The Generation Programme is a partnership between the Central North Island Wood Council, Te Uru Rākau (New Zealand Forest Service), Forest Growers Levy Trust, the South Waikato District Council, South Waikato Investment Fund Trust (SWIFT) and Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology.
The course offers participants work experience in silviculture, harvesting and mechanisation, processing, manufacturing, technology, office management, health and safety, roading, dispatch, and transport.
Site visits, training simulators, fitness and nutrition, first aid, transportation and licensing, drug and alcohol education, and NZQA qualifications are all built-in. Once completed, participants go into paid employment with options for further study.
New Horizons for Women’s Trust
New Horizons for Women Trust: Hine Kahukura aims to remove the barriers for women to access training or education.
The Trust provides grants for women in New Zealand to support them in developing their potential and creating their new horizons.
Toi Ohomai provides $20,000 to the Trust each year, which is given as Second Chance Education Awards to women engaging in tertiary education for the first time. That $20,000 is raised annually at a Charity Golf event which started in 2018.
