Learning Experience Inspires a Passion for Teaching

Passion and a positive attitude is infectious. Just ask Dale Mudgway.

Dale initially enrolled for a Bachelor of Applied Information Technology (Networking and Technical Support) at Toi Ohomai because it “was the closest to home”. He soon realised, however, that it would become much more than a simple convenience.

“I couldn’t imagine a better experience anywhere else,” says Dale.

With a love for new technology and solving intricate problems, Dale thrived in his classes, eventually passing with straight A’s.

“Aside from walking away with a degree, I was able to make new friends who shared my interests, as well as building up some really good practical experience.”

This practical experience included a stint at a Rotorua-based telecommunications company as part of his course. After graduating, he secured a permanent job with the same company, where he’s still currently employed.

“Thanks to the hands-on experience I managed to get through my studies, I was able to walk away with the skills I needed to go straight into a job. I'm now working in an IT department, where I manage the phone systems, IT setup, cabling and cameras.”

While Dale was able to use his skills to pursue his dream job, his experience at Toi Ohomai lit another fire within him; a passion for teaching.

“The tutors were amazing and the best support system throughout my studies. They thrived on helping us to succeed and inspiring us to do our best.

“I love my job and am focusing on building more experience in the telecommunications industry over the next two years, but I would love to be able to inspire people in a similar way. I’d love to pass on my experience and skills to others as a tutor.”
