Dean Tully
Programme Manager
Faculty of Health, Education and Environment
Dean joined Marine Studies in 1994. Although he spends more time on the paperwork side of things now, Dean looks forward to working in the field with students. He teaches marine vertebrates in year one, freshwater ecology and monitoring and coral reef ecology and monitoring in year two, as well as marine surveying throughout both years of the diploma.
He holds a master’s in Freshwater Ecology from the University of Waikato, is a qualified boat skipper and also a PADI Master SCUBA Diver Trainer.
Prior to working at Toi Ohomai, Dean spent two years working at Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World enhancing his marine biology and aquaculture knowledge.
He loves wildlife photography and travelling around the world. A couple of Dean's recent trips included snorkelling with manta rays in the Solomon Islands and travelling through Namibia game parks and Galapagos with my family.
Areas of research that he's interested in include tropical reef fish and invertebrates, characteristics of the little blue penguin population at Mount Maunganui, freshwater invertebrates as monitoring tools for stream quality, rainbow trout seasonal distribution in the Tarawera River, and coral reef fish of the Kavieng Province in Papua New Guinea.
