A Practice Education Partnership to Improve Mental Health Nursing Development and Practice: Feedback Informed Treatment

The preparation of students to maximise their learning in the mental health component of the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) at Toi Ohomai requires stronger clinical education partnerships.

Lakes District Health Board has been using the feedback informed treatment approach (FIT) in some areas of the mental health nursing (MHN) services and in-patient settings.

BN students need to be further prepared in such approaches to improve their learning and client outcomes.

Person-centred models have guided MHN practice and a further enhancement is FIT, which has developed from routine outcome monitoring involving consumer feedback and deliberate practice.

This research facilitated the theoretical and practice preparation of year three BN transition students in FIT.

Focus groups were used to measure factors that enhanced their learning as well as indicators of positive career choice for MHN.

Experiences and observation of practice from stakeholders alongside student learning needs were captured to inform further educational delivery in years two and three in BN for 2020.
