Te Ara Poutama – SkillME Māori and Pasifika Trade Training Scholarship

Te Ara Poutama – SkillME is a collaboration between Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, Ngā Potiki a Tamapahore Trust, Pacific Island Community Tauranga Trust, Te Taumata o Ngāti Whakaue Iho Ake Trust, Taumarunui Community Kokiri Trust, and various trades-related industry partners.

SkillME provides scholarships to Māori and Pasifika learners who wish to gain qualifications and experience in the trades and pursue pathway opportunities into employment and New Zealand apprenticeships.

The scholarships are provided with funding from the Tertiary Education Commission.

What the scholarships cover

  • The tuition fees component of your programme of study
  • Support for you to find work placement

The scholarships do not cover specific course-related costs such as training materials, or tools of trade.

To apply, you must be:

  • of Māori or Pacific descent;
  • 16–40 years of age at the start of your study;
  • a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident;
  • able to meet the entry requirements of the programme;
  • able to demonstrate a desire to work and succeed in the trades industry; and
  • committed to completing the programme

Selection process

  • A selection panel will select the students to receive the scholarships.
  • Selection will be based on:
    • whether you have met the entry requirements of your intended programme;
    • correctly filling out the online scholarship application;
    • demonstrating your commitment to completing the programme and working in your chosen field of trade.
  • If there are more applications than scholarships available, an interview may be required. The selection panel will advise you if this is the case.
