If you're passionate about promoting good nutrition and advocating for healthy lifestyle choices, particularly in how nutrition and wellbeing can affect whānau and communities, our new health science diploma is for you.
The health and wellbeing industry needs more professionals who can apply their scientific knowledge of the human body to assist people in the prevention of lifestyle-based health issues.
This course will prepare you for a career in the health, lifestyle, nutrition and wellness industries. It's also a great pathway to higher education if you’re aiming to become an allied or Māori health professional - such as a dental therapist, dietician, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and many more, all of which are in high demand in our region.

Career opportunities
Graduates will be prepared for careers in the health, lifestyle, nutrition and wellness industries.
This course also provides a foundation for higher learning opportunities in the allied health professions covered by the Health Practitioner Competence Assurance Act 2003 (dental therapists, dieticians, medical scientists, medical radiation/imaging technologists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists as an example), and those therapy professions acknowledged in the act such as social work, speech language therapy, orthotists/productionists, music and other arts therapy.

Entry criteria
Standard Entry Criteria
Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.
For Levels 5, 6 and 7 certificate or diploma, domestic students under 20 and all international students must have:
NCEA Level 2 with passes in English/Te Reo Māori or education achievement at least equivalent to NCEA Level 2 and a minimum of 42 credits at level 3; OR
Evidence of ability to complete academic requirements for the programme.
Other Considerations
Due to the work-integrated components of the course that may take place in community health organisations, applicants must:
- provide two character references. These should be from persons in positions of trust such as an employer, teacher, pastor, kaumātua or kuia. References from family, friends or work colleagues will not be accepted;
- declare, in confidence, if you have had a criminal conviction at any time in the past;
- provide a signed consent form that allows Toi Ohomai to check your record of convictions on entry, during and prior to completing the diploma. You will be accepted only after the police check is processed; and
- attend an individual interview if you’ve had any criminal convictions.
English language requirements
Level 5 certificate or diploma IELTS Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed NZ Certificate in English Language Level 4 with the Academic Endorsement or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
