Course Overview
If you love tools and machines and want to work in the outdoors in New Zealand's forestry industry, this half-year course will get you started. It focuses on manual processing and quality control.
You could play a key role in harvesting our production forests by working in a commercial forest harvesting or log scaling operation.
There's a mix of practical learning, with some theory, as well as 10 weeks of industry experience. You team up with a real harvesting crew to put your skills and knowledge into practice.
You learn how to be safe on site, make basic logging cuts, correctly process logs according to specific measurements, make decisions about grade and quality, and of course, maintain, sharpen and operate your own chainsaw.
Upon successfully completing the requirements you'll receive the award of:
- New Zealand Certificate in Forest Harvesting Operations (Manual Processing) (Quality Control) (Level 3)

Course Entry Information
Entry criteria
You must:
- be 16 years old at the time the course starts,
- be able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level, AND
- be physically able to complete the course.
Standard Entry Criteria
Admission, entry, selection, and enrolment into programmes will be in accordance with the Academic Regulations and/or, where approved, specific programme regulations.
For courses at levels 1-3, domestic and international students will be required to:
Provide evidence of ability to complete academic requirements.
Other Considerations
Successful applicants must sign a Student Drug‐Free Agreement and will be drug tested at the beginning of the course. This aligns with the strict drug testing policies in the forestry industry.
If you test positive for drugs you will need to discuss the outcome of your test result and what this might mean for your study with the relevant manager.
You'll also be unable to complete any practical work until a negative test result is provided. You will be offered support.
English language requirements
Level 3 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace or Academic, or meets a relevant English Proficiency Outcome as outlined by NZQA.
