Rotorua Graduate Launches Second Cookbook
Friday, 21 Sep 2018
Toi Ohomai graduate Deepak (Deep) Kumar will be launching his second cookbook, Let’s Eat, at the end of this year.
The book features a selection of Deep’s favourite recipes, along with some inspiring dishes from the winners and runners-up of his 2018 Junior Masterchef Rotorua competition. The book was created to raise enough funds to provide free cooking classes for children across New Zealand.
Deep, who graduated from Toi Ohomai with a Postgraduate Diploma in Hotel Management in 2012, co-owns Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in Rotorua, which he uses as a base to spread the word about healthy eating to the next generation.
“I have been running my campaign against obesity in New Zealand for the past four years,” says Deep. “The idea with Junior Masterchef Rotorua was to encourage kids to cook, learn and be healthy.”
The success of the Junior Masterchef competition has seen Deep's idea grow into a national cooking show, Junior Chefs of Aotearoa, which is currently in development.
“My mother always grew her own vegetables and herbs and taught us how to process food from the earth to a pot, and then to our dinner plates. This way of life, combined with the technical skills and experience I was able to learn at Toi Ohomai gave me the perfect platform to share my passion and knowledge with my community.”
Let’s Eat will be launched on 8 December. The profits from the book’s sales will go towards building a commercial kitchen from which Deep will provide free cooking classes.
