Free Workshops Prepare Filmmakers for Massive Opportunities

Anton Steel coaches budding film participants

Budding filmmakers are being urged to attend free workshops offered by Bay of Plenty Film chief executive Anton Steel to prepare for ‘massive’ opportunities as the number of productions being filmed in New Zealand continue to grow.

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology’s Windermere Campus hosts the first workshop next Thursday, 9 August, with five further workshops being held throughout the region over the following week.

Anton says he’s noticed an increase in enquiries from national and international film production companies, many of which have already committed to bringing their projects to the Bay. The region’s diverse scenery is a drawcard for these companies, and they are keen to recruit talented locals to utilise their intrinsic knowledge, connections, and cultural understanding.

"The industry nationwide is also set to get very busy later on this year, and we are in talks with productions outside of the region to help get Bay people experience on set," Anton says.

The workshops offer practical tips to help filmmakers of all levels to develop their careers in an industry that can be difficult to navigate.

“You can't just jump into these roles. It takes quite a few steps to get there and we can help budding filmmakers navigate these steps," Anton says.
